Consumer Protection Laws
Whether you’re buying a product or hiring services from a business, consumer laws ensure that customers’ rights and interests are safeguarded. Consumer law litigation governs the resolution of disputes arising from unfair, deceptive, or harmful practices by businesses. These can include false advertising, consumer fraud, unfair business practices, privacy violations, and antitrust and monopoly issues. The dispute does not necessarily have to be on a large scale to land in the consumer court (even minor offences, such as the quantity of a product being less than that mentioned on the packaging, are taken seriously).
The cornerstone of consumer law in India is the Consumer Protection Act of 2019. It empowers consumers with established rights and avenues for redressal in cases of faulty products, deficient services, unfair trade practices, etc, while also introducing specialised forums such as consumer commissions for accessible and prompt dispute resolution.
