Family Law

Family law governs the resolution of legal matters that impact familial relationships. It addresses an extensive array of issues such as marriage, divorce and alimony, child custody and visitation rights, adoption, paternity disputes, domestic violence and restraining orders, and inheritance and succession of estates.
Family law draws from various legislative enactments, notably the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, and the Special Marriage Act, 1954, governing marital relationships and divorce proceedings for Hindus and individuals opting for a secular marriage, respectively. The Guardians and Wards Act, 1890, sets out rules about child custody, while the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, deals with cases of domestic violence
